Can I do a sleep study if I only sleep 5 hours?
Last updated: 2026-09-06
Quick answer
Yes, you can do a home sleep study even if you only sleep about 5 hours. A Level 3 test measures breathing events per hour of recording, so a few hours of genuine sleep is usually enough to score. Sleep as you normally would; if the night is too short or broken to interpret, we discuss repeating it.
Do you need a full 8 hours?
No. A Level 3 home test reports events per hour, so it does not need a full eight hours to produce a usable result. Several hours of real sleep generally give enough data to identify obstructive sleep apnea.
What if your sleep is short or broken?
Just sleep as normally as you can — don't force yourself to stay in bed longer than usual. If the recording captures too little sleep to interpret confidently, we will tell you and, if needed, arrange a repeat night.
Getting a good result
Keep your usual bedtime routine, avoid daytime naps before the test, and skip alcohol that night unless your doctor says otherwise. A representative night, even a short one, is more useful than an unusually long or medicated one.
